Forreston Herald: August 13, 1887

John H. Long, aged 52 years, and residing near the Fairview school house, about 5 miles north of Mt. Morris, met with a sad and fatal accident last Tuesday evening. He had just returned from the funeral of Mrs. John Cooley of Adeline. It seems that he had made his son a present of a two month-old colt if he would care for it. Just as Mr. Long returned the son was trying to catch the colt to put a halter on it. The colt was unruly, and the
father went to the assistance of the boy who had the colt cornered in the barn. The colt kicked, striking Mr. Long in the breast near the heart, killing him instantly. The funeral will take place tomorrow morning at Silver Creek Church.
