Obituary from the Freeport Journal Standard for Monday February 19, 1923:

Mrs. Lauretta Petrie Hiteman, a resident of Freeport for 20 years, passed away Saturday at her home at 815 South Liberty Avenue, her death being caused by a complication of diseases, from which she had been ill for almost a year. She leaves to mourn her loss, her husband, John Hiteman, and twelve children; Dallas, and LeRoy, Denver, Colo.; Mrs. Jas. Manning and Mrs. Paul Siegel, Chicago; Mrs. George Guth; Mrs. William Johnston; Mrs. Einar Oleson; Marvin Hiteman, Adali Hiteman; Opal Hiteman; Valeria Hiteman and Mrs. Eva Leonard, all of Freeport. She is also survived by fourteen grandchildren. She leaves the following half-brothers and sisters: Walter and Frank Woltz, and Mrs. Grace Porterfield, of Des Moines, Iowa, and Bert Woltz and Mrs. Hattie Haines, of Wichita, Kansas.

Lauretta Petrie was born in Maryland Township, Ogle County, Illinois on January 4, 1860, and passed away at the age of 63 years, 1 month and 16 days. On October 3, 1878, she was united in marriage to John Hiteman, and to this union twelve children were born. She was a good wife and a loving mother, and her passing will be mourned by many friends.

Funeral services will take place at the late residence on Tuesday afternoon at 2 o'clock. Rev. Charles A. Briggs, pastor of the First Methodist Church, will conduct the services, and interment will be made in Oakland. Three sons-in-law, Einar Oleson, James Manning, of Chicago, Mayland Burchell, and three grandsons, John Leonard, Marvin Guth and Boyce Johnston, will serve as pallbearers.
