SAD ACCIDENT – Last Thursday a little son of J. M. Stowell, Esq., of Mt. Carroll and grandson of Maj. McCully, or our own town, came near losing his life by being hooked by and enraged cow and thrown under a manger, where it is supposed he was struck on the side of the head by the horse. Immediate relief was afforded, and about two inches square of the skull removed. At latest accounts it was thought he would recover.

KILLED BY LIGHTENING – John E. Bond, of Oregon, was killed by lightening while intering the village of Franklin Grove on Friday of last week. His remains were brought to Oregon on the same day, and we learn from the Reporter, were interred by the … (cut off)

A Sad Affliction
Mr. Tooke and lady of this city, with their only daughter and a little son about three years and eight months old, while on a visit to Courtland (sic) of this State, the past week, met with one of the most heart-rending accidents we have ever been called upon to record. Within the past eight months, Mr. Tooke has buried three children and now has but one living to comfort himself and wife in their affliction. Within two years he has lost four and all of them interesting and promising children.
Of the sad accident which resulted in the death of the last, a pleasant bright boy we are furnished with the following authentic account.
Prof. Tooke, having recently been appointed Dep. G. W. C. Templar of the state, was at Cortland by invitation to lecture and organize a Temple, and while stopping at the house of a friend and about to start for Chicago to attend a convention to be held there this week, the daughter in arranging her satchel observing a little toy pistol which was sent by a friend to her little brother, and handed it to him. In his ecstasy of delight he ran to show it to the lady of the house, who immediately stepped tyo the till of the bureau and took out a beautiful little silver mounted four barrel pistol, to show the child and compare with his.
Mrs. Tooke observing it cautioned her to be careful with it, as she was afraid it was loaded. To convince her that it was not, she held it up and snapped it, failing to go off. She immediately cocked it again, and on being requested to put it away, in the act of readjusting the hammer without reference to the direction in which it was pointed lodged the fatal bullet in the left breast of the dear little boy, who placing his hand suddenly upon the wound exclaimed. “Ma that hurts me.” The child soon began to fail and though conscious to the last, and anxious to comfort his heartstricken and unhappy mother, he exclaimed “Ma I am going to Freddie and Emma that is all.” – a little brother and sister who died last summer.
Little Eugenie lingered but a few hours and breathed his last.

SLATER – June 11, 1868, after a short illness, Mrs. Emily Slater, aged 84 years, wife of Mr. Belford Slater, near Polo, and daughter of Timothy and Harriett Carpenter, formerly of Canada Settlement in this County. Thus suddenly, but in peace and holy triumph, has passed away a faithful wife, dutiful mother and an exemplary Christian. Our loss is her gain. COM.

LAWSON – In this township, on July 18th, Mr. John Lawson, Sr., in the 87th year of his age. Mr. Lawson was a native of Scotland, and the father of a numerous family who mostly survive him and reside in this vicinity. His gray hairs descended to the grave in honor and peace, and he leaves to his children a good name which it should ever be their aim to preserve and transmit unsullied to their posterity.

APPLEFORD, -- In Dover Ill, Oct 13 Rev Daniel Appleford Aged 34 years 10 mo.
Rev. Dr. Appleford whose remains were brought here for interment Thursday was a member of the Rock River Annual Conference of the M. E. Church, , which relation he had faithfully and honorably sustained for the past four years.
As a Teacher in this vicinity, and as a Sunday School Superintendent, he will be remembered by many. In 1864 he was appointed pastor of Leaf River Circuit, in ’65 and ’66, to Dement and Malta circuit; and in 1867, to Dover and Malden in Bureau County, where he finished at once his ministerial work and earthly life. He was a native of Canada West, and came to this county in 1856. But he has passed to a “better country” whose inhabitants never say “I am sick.” W. H. S.

WORDEN, -- In Andes N. Y. Sept. 28th, Mr. Ira Worden, in the 63rd year of his age. Mr. Worden was one of the oldest and most reliable citizens; highly respected by all who knew him.
SCHRYVER. – Near this town on Sabbath Oct 11th Barnet Schryver Aged 72 yrs, 7 mo. and 25 days.
Mr. S. was an early riser and while about the out-door chores in the morning fell dead – apparently without a struggle, for when discovered by his family life was extinct. Thus passed away another of our old and respected citizens. COM.

CULVER.—At Lincoln, Nebraska Nov. 2nd 1968. Mrs. Catherine Culver, aged 31 years; daughter of John and Lydia Lawrence of Canada Settlement in this Co.
Friends will recollect the affliction of the family a year ago, in the loss of another daughter, Mrs. Peck, at the same place. A little over a year a year ago these sisters moved to their new western homes. Mrs. Culver, like her sister, exemplified in death as in life, the power of the Christian’s faith and hope. To those around her dying bed she said, “Meet me in Heaven.” To a remark, she observed in reply, “If these are my last days, they are my best days, and brightest;” and a few moments before death “Jesus is always precious.” Thus do the loved pass on before.
