Obituary:
"June 28, 1910; Benjamin Chaney, a son of the late Phineas Chaney, Jr., [sic, Phineas Chaney, Sr.], of Oregon, died quite suddenly Friday evening after a few hours illness, caused by the intense heat of Thursday and Friday. Mr. Chaney was not in robust health since an acute illness several years ago covering a period of more than two years. He has been able however to take care of himself and has roomed over the Ogle County Bank on Washington Street, taking his meals downtown. On Thursday he was out in the sun rather more than usual, but it was not known he was suffering from its effects until about 11 a.m. when he called across the hall to the operators in the Ogle County Telephone Office and asked them to get a doctor for him. Dr. L. E. Schneider did all that was possible to relieve him but death occurred between 7 and 8 o'clock Friday night.

The body was removed to the home of Mr. and Mrs. Jerome Burroughs. Mrs. Burroughs being a cousin of Mr. Chaney's and the funeral was held from there on Sunday afternoon at 2 o'clock. Rev. W. O. Bellamy of the M. E. Church conducting the services, in which he referred to the thrift and integrity which had characterized his life for the past 69 years. Among the many kind actions of his life was driving the minister to the cemetery at innumerable funerals, which he continued to do until his serious illness of several years ago, which compelled him to dispose of his horses.

Many of his life long friends were present at the services. He is survived by two sisters and one brother; Mrs. Simon Sheaff of Holcomb, and Dr. Woodburn who resides in California; Samuel Chaney of Joliet. Many beautiful floral tributes from relatives and friends testified to the esteem in which he was held. Among the most beautiful was a floral anchor from his brother, Samuel Chaney of Joliet, who was unable to be present on account of illness. Bert Chaney and Ida Chaney, Mrs. Mary Chaney Clark of Rockford are among the Rockford cousins of the deceased. Among those from out of town in attendance at the funeral were, Mr. and Mrs. E. J. Countryman and family of Dixon, J. C. Sheaff and wife and Miss Dora Sheaff, Frank Sheaff and wife and Mrs. Edgar Stanbury, all of Holcomb and Miss Ella Chaney of Paynes Point. Interment was made in Riverview beside his parents and a sister, Miss Emma Chaney."
