Tuesday morning, Jan 21st [1899], at 3:40, Mrs. Catherine Huffnall Scott, of this city, gently fell asleep, at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Amanda Coakley, with whom she resided. Grandmother Scott was probably the oldest person in this town and one of the oldest in the county, as her age was 94 years, 3 months and 3 days. She was born at Canajoharie, N.Y., and came of Dutch ancestry. With her husband and family she came to Polo in July 1855, and never afterward left the township. Her husband, Peter Scott, died in June 1877. They had a family of seven children. One died in infancy and two, Mrs. Mary Sheldon and David preceded their mother to the other world. Mrs. Scott sent two sons, James and David to serve her country in the Civil War. David fell by the bullets of sharp shooters at Waynesboro, Ga. at the close of the war while carrying the colors. Her four living children, Mrs. Elizabeth Adams, of St. Paul; Mrs. Amanda Coakley, of this city; James Scott, of Chicago, and Daniel Scott, of Sioux Falls, S.D. were at her bedside when she died. The funeral was held at Mrs. Coakley's residence, Wednesday afternoon. Dr. J.H. More conducted the services in the presence of a large congregation.
