CHARLES PETRIE'S BODY EXPECTED

The remains of Charles Petrie who died, Feb 12, 1902, while in the service of his country in the Phillipine Islands, will reach Haldane, Thursday evening of this week. His parents, Mr. and Mrs. Lewis Petrie, reside at that place. The funeral services will be held in the Brethren Church in Haldane, Sunday, May 11, at one o'clock.
Charles Petrie enlisted in the 21st regiment, August 9, 1899, and went to Manilla. Six months after his enlistment he became a member of the 16th regiment to which he belonged until the time of his death which occurred very unexpectedly from the effects of an operation which became necessary on account of the enlargement of his kidneys. The deceased was born March 11, 1871 in Maryland, Ogle County. When ten years of age he moved with his parents into the town of Lincoln, which adjoins the town of his birth and here he grew to manhood, receiving his early education in the rural schools and afterwards attending school and college in Toledo, Iowa. He chose as his profession that of dentistry and graduated from a Chicago dental school in the spring of 1899. He leaves to mourn his departure, two sisters, one brother and his parents, besides a large number of friends. he was a young man of good habits and well liked by all who knew him. He died bravely defending his country. May he rest in peace.

Charles sent a cigar to McClellan Scott Woltz from the Phillipine Islands in 1898. The cigar is presently (2006) in the possession of Roberta Hall Hirsch, grand-daughter of McClellan Woltz.
