BABCOCK.--Died on Saturday the 4th day of July at 7 a.m., E. R. Babcock in the 74th year of his age. Deceased was of a family of six children, three brothers and three sisters. He was born in the town of Westerly, R. I., in 1811. When quite young he removed with his parents to Chenango County, N. Y., thence to Steuben County, N.Y. where he continued to reside until about 1864, when he removed to Illinois, living a greater part of the time with his daughter, Mrs. J. H. Helm in Byron, Illinois. For a number of years he has been one of the most lively and jolly old men in our town. He was scarcely ever dejected, always relishing a joke or a game of croquet. As one of our citizens said "he was our king and leader," and is very much missed by them. When he was taken sick five weeks ago he could scarcely realize the fact that his physique had been worn out. Shortly after he was confined to his bed, his entire left side was completely paralyzed and remained so until his death. During his sickness he frequently expressed himself that he was prepared to leave this world. He passed away quietly on the morning of the Fourth. The funeral services were held in the M. E. Church at 2 o'clock Sunday afternoon.
