Pioneer Resident of Northern Illinois Passes Away on Monday
Mrs. Eliza Jacobs, an esteemed resident of the city, passed away at her home, 53 Jefferson Street, at 3:05 o'clock Monday morning, following a brief illness. Mrs. Jacobs, who was in her 94th year had been in good health and had been able to do her own housework until about one week ago, when she was taken ill. Owing to her advanced age she failed rapidly until the end came yesterday morning.
Eliza Barnes was born near Cumberland, Maryland, in Allegheny County, April 1, 1826. She was the seventh of a family of eleven children, all of whom lived to an advanced age. On August 6th, 1848, she was united in marriage to Hezekiah Jacobs, also of Cumberland. They made their home in Maryland until February 1853, when they moved to Adeline, Illinois, residing on the same farm until October 1891, after which they came to Freeport to make their home. Mr. Jacobs passed away on May 23, 1892. She is survived by one sister, Mrs. Mary Major, of Restil, Washington.Submitted by John Jacobs
