Emanuel Slifer is a farmer on section 24 in the township of Mount Morris, and is also engaged in the growing of stock. He was born in Washington Co., Md., Dec. 21, 1848. Jonathon Slifer, his father was born in the same county, in "My Maryland ," and passed his entire life there. His wife, Lovenia (Avy) Slifer, was also born there. Her death took place in Washington County, where she had lived all her life. Both parents were of German origin. The household included five children: Mary is the wife of William Dellinger, and they live in Washington Co., Md. Mr. Slifer is the second child and oldest son; Alice L., is unmarried and lives in her native county in Maryland; John C. lives in Washington Co., Md.; Annie E. is also unmarried and a resident of her county in Maryland. Mr. Slifer was 23 years of age when he came from Maryland to Illinois, reaching this county in 1872, and passed some years in the capacity of a farm laborer. He was married to Miss Martha J. Thomas Aug. 10, 1880. A full sketch of her parents, Ezra and Elizabeth (Rice) Thomas, is given on another page. They have one child--Bessie, born June 2, 1881. Mrs. Slifer is an accomplished lady, and before her marriage, was a teacher in the public schools of her native township. Mr. Slifer is a prominent and successful farmer and is the owner of 170 acres of good and well-improved land. He is a member of the Dunkard Church. Mrs. Slifer belongs to the Lutheran Church. He is a Republican in politics principles, and an enterprising, public-spirited and good citizen.
