Frederick Emmett Hoverland

Fred Hoverland, 86 years old, Civil War veteran, died Saturday night at the home of his son, George, three miles northwest of Leaf River, after an illness of two years. Mr. Hoverland was born January 17, 1844 in Springville, NY, and at the age of 17 years he enlisted in Company F, 116th Regiment of New York Volunteers. He received an honerable discharge at the close of the war. At the age of 21, he came to Ogle County where he attended Mt. Morris College, later marrying Miss Jane Brown in 1871. Since the he has resided in this vicinity, his wife passing away in 1923. Besides the son, he is survived by one daughter, Mrs. Louis Kramer of Leaf River; one sister, Mrs. Florence Stephens, Kansas City, KS; and nine grandchildren. Funeral services were held Tuesday at the Leaf River Methodist Church, Rev. Willis Wilson of Chicago officiating and Rev. C. O. Gerard assisting. Burial in Lightsville Cemetery.

Mr. Hoverland was a useful citizen of this community. Besides serving as postmaster about thirty years ago, he held a number of township offices and has taken an active part in the affairs of this community.
