Death of Frederick Garkey

Died, at his home in Adeline, April 5, 1910, Frederick H. Garkey. He was born in Hummerson Lippe Detmold, Germany, January 28. 1845. He came to this country with his parents in 1852, was married to Halana Paul November 17, 1870. To them were born five children,, two of which died in infancy. The three surviving are: Elizabeth Meier, Frederick W., and Samuel D., also the wife and mother, one sister, Mrs. Seifert of Freeport, and two brothers August and Henry of this vicinity. The deceased was confirmed in the Evangelical German faith in the spring of 1861 and remained an active member for the past thirty years, at one time being a trustee. He enlisted in the Union army in the spring of 1864, in the hundred day service Company D. 142 Regiment of Illinois volunteers, and was honorably discharged. After his marriage, they lived for a time near Mount Morris from where they moved to a farm east of Adeline and there remained with his wife and family, tolling faithfully and finally gained a nice little --------- and in November, 1906 they moved into their snug little home in the Village of Adeline with every comfort at hand, but alas he was stricken down with paralysis from which he only partially recovered. October 10, 1908 he received the second stroke and the third and last one March 31st. The funeral was from the home, Friday afternoon, to the German Evangelical church in this village. The Rev. Bloesch, his minister and the Rev. Keiser of Forreston, in charge. The pallbearers were selected by the deceased some little time ago and were: Henry Stukenberg, Henry Ratmeyer, Henry Hartje, George Snyder, Earnest Gesin and Fred Hilmer. Those who were present from a distance were: Mrs. Minnie Seifert a sister, Miss Anna Seifert, and Mr. and Mrs. Eugene Ainsworth also of Freeport, August Lohafer of Holstein, Iowa, Fred Keilsmeier of Pearl City, Christ Meier of Clare, Ill., and many friends and relatives from Mount Morris, Forreston and Leaf River. The deceased was a model farmer, a first class neighbor, and honest man and a sincere Christian. The family and community will deeply mourn this their great loss. The above we wish to say contains not one word of flattery, and justly describes him as we have known him for forty years.
