George R. Cole, senior partner of the firm of Cole & Snyder, merchant tailors, of Oregon, was born at Westport Essex Co., N.Y., June 13, 1845, and is a son of Harry N. and Eliza A. (Reynolds) Cole. His parents were also natives of Westport, N.Y., and were descendants of New England ancestors. George R. Cole received a good common school education and later was employed in clerking. In the year 1868 he went to Topeka, Kan., where he engaged as book-keeper in a wholesale house. Having heard of the great facilities offered in the growing west, and thinking he could benefit himself by emigrating, in 1877 Mr. Cole moved to Pueblo, Col., and after remaining there for about six years he came to Oregon and engaged in his present business. He has established a good trade and is meeting with success, owing to his economy, industry and fair and honest dealings with his customers. Mr. Cole was married at Topeka, Kan., Dec. 12, 1872 to Miss Carrie A. Gage, daughter of Hiram H. Gage, and who was born in Penacock, Merrimack Co., N.H. Mr. and Mrs. Cole have one child, a daughter, Zella M., aged six years. Mr. Cole is an earnest Republican, and has voted with that party continuously since he became age. He is regarded as an energetic business man in the community in which he resides.
