HARRY SAMMON

Harry Sammon who has spent almost his entire mature life in this city, passed away at the Lincoln Hospital Sunday morning, March 44 (sic) following a gradual decline in health. He submitted to an operation a few weeks ago hoping to regain his health but it was discovered that his case was a hopeless one and beyond the skill of surgery and he gradually failed.

Harry Sammon was born at Wilmington, Ohio, April 1, 1854 (sic) He came to Illinois with his parents in 1868 and was reared on a farm near Paw Paw. On December 9, 1885 he was united in marriage with Miss Nora DeCourcey. To this union were born four children of whom two preceded him in death, Gertrude dying in infancy and Lucile in 1915 at the age of twelve years. Mrs. Sammon passed away February 27, 1917, eleven years ago. Two daughters, Agnes and Marie Sammon who reside at home survive. The deceased also leaves five sisters, Mrs. B. Dee of Rochelle, Mrs. Mary Minnigan (sic) of Sycamore, Ill, Mrs. Kathern Wood of Detroit, Mich, Mrs. C. C. Miller and Mrs. T. G. Daum of Steward and two brothers, Matthew of Detroit, Mich. and James of Dubuque, Iowa.

Mr. Sammon has been a barber in this city for forty years and has a large circle of friends who deplore his untimely death. He was a member of the Catholic Order of Forresters, the Modern Woodmen, Royal Neighbors and the Rochelle Elks. His cheerful disposition and his friendly attitude toward all made him many warm friends and he will be greatly missed in the orders to which he belonged as well as in his immediate family.

Funeral services were held at St. Patrick's Church at 9:30 Tuesday morning conducted by Rev. Father O'Brien. Interment took place in the family lot in the South Side Cemetery.

Note on errors in the obituary. Henry (Harry) died on March 4. Harry could not have been born in 1854. He does not appear on the 1860 census in Wilmington, Ohio, with his parents. He does appear as Henry in 1870 as a nine year old in Alto Township, Lee County, Illinois. His tombstone reads 1864. His older sister Mary married Michael Minihan. (Contributed by Margaret J.
