1886 - Portrait and Biographical Album of Ogle County, Illinois, Chicago: Chapman Brothers, 1886
Jacob Hiestand, The subject of this sketch is a retired farmer and preacher, and is well and favorably known to the community. He is a native of Washington County, Md., where he was born, Sept. 24, 1824. His father, of the same name, was a native of Lancaster County, PA., within those borders part of his days were passed as a tiller of the soil. His mother was Miss Susan Welty, and also a native of Washington County, MD. Our subject was the youngest of nine children. He was reared on the farm and received his education in the district schools of that day. His father died in 1835, and seven years later, in company with his mother and sister, the subject of our sketch emigrated to Illinois, settling in Ogle County. Before the era of railroads, the journey was made overland, with a team and wagon. Starting the 10th day of May, 1842, they remained a few days in Ohio, en route, arriving in Ogle County in the latter part of the following June. An elder brother, Benjamin, had preceded them and was living in Leaf River Township, under whose roof they first found shelter, and where his mother continued to reside until her death.
Mr. Hiestand was 18 years old when he reached Illinois. He found employment several seasons as a farm hand and during one season taught school. In 1846 occurred his marriage with Lucinda Rinehart, a native of Washington County, Md., and the daughter of Henry and Mary (Kretsinger) Rinehart. Just previous to this our sketch had purchased some land on Section 33, now Maryland Township, upon which he began housekeeping. He remained on this farm, gradually improving it, for 27 years, erecting good and substantial buildings.
In the fall of 1874 he removed to Adeline, having purchased the home in which he has since resided. The subject of this notice joined the United Brethren Church and three years later became a licensed preacher, which calling he followed in connection with management of his farm up to his retirement from active life. In politics he has voted with the Republican party since its organization. His wife was taken from him some five years ago and Oct. 18, 1881, he was married to Margaret Eavey, daughter of Isaac D. and Catherine (Hammond) Eavey. Of his first union six children were the offspring. Mrs. H. is a member of the same Church as her husband.
