Former Poloan is Accident Victim

JEFFERSON YEAKEL DIES OF INJURIES RECEIVED IN AUTO CRASH NEAR AMES, IOWA

Jefferson Yeakel, aged 74, a former resident of Polo, was killed almost instantly in an auto accident Thursday afternoon, December 9, when the Buick sedan in which he was riding skidded and upset in a ditch, crashing into a telephone pole. The accident occurred as Mr. Yeakel, his wife and her son, Ray Peck, were returning to their home in Ames, Iowa, after a short visit in Kanawha, Iowa, at the home of Mr. and Mrs. John Yeakel.

The gravel road on which they were traveling was icy and Mr. Peck, who was driving, was proceeding with much caution. As the car skidded both he and Mr. Yeakel attempted to right it and had almost gained control when it skidded more severely and slid into a ditch, upsetting. The top was crushed against a telephone pole on the side where Mr. Yeakel was riding, causing fatal injuries from which he died a few minutes later, never regaining consciousness. Mrs. Yeakel suffered a broken right arm and painful bruises. Mr. Peck sustained bad bruises about his shoulder and side but had no broken bones. A doctor who was coming toward them at the time of the accident rendered first aid.

Funeral services were held Monday afternoon at the Presbyterian Church in Ames. The remains arrived in Polo, via Dixon, early Tuesday afternoon and funeral services were held at the Evangelical Church, Rev. S.G. Eberly officiated, being assisted by Rev. W. A. Unangst and Rev. H. L. Trump. The pall bearers were Frank Abbott, Bert Flowers, John Pyfer, Wm. Smith, Albert Esterly and D. H. Hostetter. Interment was in Fairmount Cemetery.

Mrs. Jefferson Yeakel, Miss Helen Peck of Ames, Mr. and Mrs. James Yeakel and daughter of Kanawha, Mr and Mrs. Maynard Yeakel of Hampton and Mrs. Ina Zigler of Algona accompanied the remains to Polo for the funeral. They will visit at the John Yeakel home for several days before returning to Iowa.
