Many Friends Shocked by Sudden Death of Lyman C. Wilson

The great number of friends in this city and surrounding country were saddened Tuesday morning when the news spread swiftly of the death of Lyman C. Wilson, which occurred at shortly prior to the midnight hour at the family residence on south 4th street, at the close of a brief illness. Though Mr. Wilson had been far from enjoying his usual health for several months past, yet neighbor he nor his family anticipated the sad ending that was so soon to come to them.
Lyman C. Wilson was a native of Ogle County, having been born in the town of Pine Creek, March 12, 1846, where he succeeded to the old home farm after the death of his parents. November 13, 1873, he was joined in wedlock with Miss Rhoda Rogers, a resident of Grand Detour, who, with two daughters, Mesdames W. P. Fearer and Dr. H. H. Sheets, both of this city, survive and keenly realize the bereavement that has so suddenly been visited upon them. Besides these the deceased is survived by a twin sister, Mrs. Paulina Newcomer, of St. Charles, Ill.
About twelve years ago Mr. Wilson and family left the farm and came to Oregon to make their home.
When a lad of 17 years, Mr. Wilson enlisted as a soldier in defense of his country and served in Co. I, 140th Ill. Vol. Inf., until mustered out at the close of the war.
The immediate cause of his death was heart trouble. During Monday he experienced pain several times and in the evening visited the office of Dr. Sheets, who gave him medical attention. Later the pain became more intense and he was conveyed to his home and for a brief time the pain eased, only to occur again more intense, until the heart ceased as above stated.
Mr. Wilson has always been an active and energetic man, both mentally and physically, giving liberally of his time, labor and sympathy whenever necessary. He was honored and respected by a host of friends who today mourn the death of a true friend.
The funeral service was conducted from the family residence at 2:30 on Wednesday afternoon, by Rev. C.B. Harman, pastor of the Lutheran Church and was attended by many friends of the deceased and his family.
Burial was made in Riverview Cemetery.
