Obituary from Leaf River, Ogle Co., IL newspaper:

Martin F., oldest child of Amos M. and Eliza Rothermel, was born Sept. 25, 1864, in Mt. Morris Township in what was known as the Sawmill House of Jonas Shafstal, and died April 27th, 1924, at his residence near the Cedar Bluff school house at the age of 59 years, 7 months, and 2 days. He was married August 15, 1888, to Edna Miller, who preceded him to the Great Beyond, April 28, 1890. He was also preceded in death by a brother, Asa Ellis, Sept. 26, 1869; his mother on May 1, 1904, and a sister, Melinda Hankey, on Feb. 23, 1912. He is survived by his father, three brothers; George F., of Mt. Morris, Jonas A., of Madison, Wis., Amos W., of Egan; and a sister, Mrs. Fred Piper, of Clinton, Minn; also eleven nephews and five nieces besides many relatives. At an early age he united with the M. E. Church of Adeline and remained a member of this church until called to join the Great Church Triumphant. The funeral services were held at the U. B. Church Tuesday afternoon, Rev. Divan of Polo officiating, assisted by Rev. Allen of Leaf River. The bearers of the dead were six nephews. Mrs. Frank Borland and Miss Martha Myers sang "In the Sweet Bye and Bye", "Shall We Meet Beyond the River", and "In That City". Miss Frances Eakle at the piano. Those from a distance who attended the funeral were Mr. and Mrs. Jonas Rothermel of Madison, Wis.; Jonas Shafstal of Waterloo, Ia.; Mrs. Frank Apple and son Henry, and sister Dora Wallace, of Grundy Center, Iowa; Lewis Rothermel and daughter, Mrs. Maude Kampmeyer, and Mr. and Mrs. Alvin Rothermel of Shannon; Mr. and Mrs. William Highbarger and son Fay, of Seward, and Lewis Fossler of Rockford.
