Leaf River Register, April 11, 1918

Mary Caroline Peterson was born in Franklin County, Pennsylvania, August 8, 1862, and died at her home in Lightsville, April 4, 1918, aged 55 years, 7 months, and 27 days. While yet a child, she moved with her parents to Illinois and settled in this community where she resided ever since. On September 18, 1878, she was married to John F. Cave at Forreston. To this union were born 14 children, six of which died in infancy and preceded her to the better land. Eight children, seven sons and one daughter, two sisters, four brothers, an aged mother, two grandaughters, and her husband are left to mourn the loss of a kind wife, mother, and sister.

At an early age she was converted and joined the United Brethren Church to which she was always faithful, having held offices in the Sunday School, Missionary Society, and other branches of the church at Leaf River. The funeral was held at the home Sunday afternoon, Aoruk 8th, Rev. J. L. Buckwalter of Mt. Carroll officating assisted by Rev. A. X. Harrison. The deceased had selected songs she wished to have sung at her funeral which were "In that City", "Jesus is Mine", Nearer My God to Thee", which were beautifully sung by the choir, Mrs. Frank Kretsinger and her two sons, Eldridge and Burton, and Mrs. Wm. Hoover with Mrs. Hawkins at the organ. Just across the way from the home in the Lightsville Cemetery, the mother was sweetly laid to rest by the following who were pallbearers: M. E. Kretsinger, John P. Wilson, A. M. Newcomer, D. A. White, Jacob Bowers, and James F. Hess. Those who attended the funeral from a distance were George W. Cave of Kirkwood and William Cave and family of Rockford, both being brothers of J. F. Cave.
