Another Old Settler Gone

Mrs. Matilda (Medlar) Black passed away early Sunday morning, May 1, at the home of her son, George E. Medlar in Pine Creek Township, aged eighty-five years, three months and twenty-three days, her birth having occurred in Garrett County, Maryland, January 5, 1825. “Grandma” Black, as she was familiarly termed throughout the community, had been a long and patient sufferer having on June 14 of last year, been stricken with a paralytical (sic) shock, which rendered her almost helpless, since which affliction she had gradually declined until the end came. Matilda Fearer was the only daughter of John and Mary Fearer who came to Illinois in 1837, settling in Bureau County January 13, 1842. She became the wife of Samuel F. Medlar and in 1845 came to Ogle County settling in Pine Creek Township where she had since resided except twelve years’ residence in Polo. In August 18, 1881 death called Rev. S. F. Medlar to his reward when Mrs. Medlar took up her residence with her son G.E. Medlar. January 5, 1886 she was united in marriage to Franklin Black with whom she lived until the death of Mr. Black on January 29, 1905, since which time she had lived with her son. Funeral services were held at the Mt. Zion Church yesterday conducted by Rev. Edwards of the U.B. Church.
