THREE WIDELY KNOWN PIONEERS TAKEN IN A WEEK

Passing of Wm. Swingley and Mrs. Mary Etnyre of Oregon and John Harmon of Maryland

The rapidity of the passing of the old settlers of Ogle County is called to mind by the death, during the past week, of members of three of the most widely known pioneer families of the west part of the county. The following account of their long lives will be found of interest:....

Newton Harmon

Newton Harmon was born in Ogle County, Illinois, August 16, 1854, and died at the home of his father, John Harmon, at Maryland, March 22, 1904, aged 49 years, 9 months and 12 days. As mentioned last week, he had come from Egan to Maryland to help care for his sick father, and was himself taken sick and died. He had not been strong physically for a number of years. Most of his life was spent in Ogle County, with the exception of a short residence in Dakota. About eight years ago he was married to Marion Speaker, who preceded him to the grave about six years. He leaves a father, an only son, a brother, Elmer; two sisters, Mrs. Frank Rapp, of Leaf River, and Mrs. Henry Newcomer of Haldane, and many friends who mourn his departure.

The remains were taken to Leaf River on the 10:42 train Thursday and conveyed to the Christian Church, where services were conducted by Rev. Pitman, after which the procession moved to the Egan Cemetery, where the remains were placed beside those of his wife.
