"A SUDDEN SUMMONS Richard Chaney Comes Home from a Trip and Dies Within a Few Hours -- Heart Disease the Cause. Richard Chaney, one of Rockford's most esteemed residents, was called very suddenly to his final account last night. A week ago yesterday he started out on a trip for the Rockford Insurance Company to Wisconsin points. On Saturday last he felt somewhat ill and not improving Sunday he determined to return home. He reached Rockford yesterday afternoon and went to his daughter's residence, Mrs. John L. Clark, on South First Street, where his wife also resides. He seemed comparatively comfortable during the afternoon, but after supper he grew worse and suffered severe DISTRESS OF THE STOMACH. Dr. Goodwin was called about 7 o'clock, and later Dr. Catlin was called in. Both physicians worked most vigorously to relieve the patient, but without success, and at 12 o'clock last night his spirit passed away.
Deceased has been troubled with heart disease for something over a year, and he had also experienced much distress from dyspepsia. He was about 65 years of age and had resided in Rockford for 21 years. When he was quite a young man, he began his career in Oregon, Ogle County and conducted a dry goods store there for a number of years. There also he married his wife, Miss Amanda Lockwood, who survives him as also does his only child, Mrs. Mary Chaney Clark. He was later in the dry goods business in Peru, Ill, and Beloit, Wis., returning again to Oregon from whence he came to Rockford in 1863. He has been agent for the Rockford Insurance Company for some years and was a faithful, diligent worker, a perfect gentleman and a most valuable agent. The funeral will occur at 2 o'clock tomorrow afternoon. His wife is a member of Centennial Church, and Rev. G. R. VanHorne will probably conduct the obsequies."
