Riley A. Motter was born in West Grove, Ogle County, Illinois on June 2nd 1854 and departed this life at his home in Leaf River, August 1, 1918, being aged 64 years, 1 month, and 29 days. He had lived the greater part of his life near the place of his death and was a well known man in this community.
He was united in marriage with Mary Light on November 20, 1879. To this union thirteen children were born, one having preceded the father in death. Mr. Motter was converted about 38 years ago and has long been a member of the United Brethren Church. The funeral was held in Leaf River on Monday, August 5th at the United Brethren Church. Rev. J. L. Buckwalter of Mt. Carroll officiating assisted by Rev. A. N. Harrison.
Mr. Motter had been ailing for a long time and several months ago he went to Rochelle and underwent an operation. After more than a month's stay in the hospital, he returned home, gradually growing weaker until the end which came near the noon hour on August 1st. The deceased was an ardent supporter of the United States, in it's part it was taking in the world's war. He has three sons serving as soldiers, William and Clinton in France, and John, who is in training in South Carolina, but who was present at the funeral. Mr. Motter was a highly respected citizen and in his departure, Leaf River loses another one of it's good men.
Three beautiful songs were sung as part of the funeral exercises, by Mrs. Lewis Harrison and Mrs. M. E. LaMay with Miss Ida Clevidence at the organ. Many beautiful floral garlands expressed the respect and esteem in which the deceased was held by his friends and relatives. Besides his wife, he leaves to mourn his departure, six sons, six daughters, twelve grandchildren, two brothers, and two sisters, besides other relatives and a host of friends. He was buried in the beautiful cemetery at the North Grove Christian Church by the following who acted as pall bearers, F. L. Ayers, Frank Willier, J. M. Kendel, and D. E. Kretsinger.
