"S.P. CHANEY WILL BE BURIED TODAY Former Rockford Grocer Died in Milwaukee Monday of Pneumonia. The remains of Samuel P. Chaney, a former Rockford grocer, who died Monday afternoon at the National Soldiers' Home in Milwaukee, where he had lived for eight years, was brought to Rockford this week over the C., M. & St. P. road and placed in a vault in Cedar Bluff Cemetery. He had been ill of pneumonia only a short time when death came to his relief. Mr. Chaney was widely known in this city, as he conducted a grocery store for several years, was an alderman from the first ward in 1888 under Mayor H. C. Scovill, and town collector. His wife died about eight years ago and after her death he went to the National Soldiers' Home. He is survived by two sisters, Mrs. Robert Wolfkill of Hamilton, Ontario, and Mrs. Edward Moore of Sharon, Pa. Mrs. Wolfkill will accompany the body to this city. Burt J. Chaney and Mrs. J. L. Clark are cousins of the deceased. He was a member of Company A, One Hundred Thirty-fourth Ohio Infantry, in the Civil War, enlisting May 6, 1864. He (sic) was mustered out Aug. 31 of the same year."

Samuel P. Chaney is the son of Samuel Chaney, Jr. and was born 17 Dec 1844 in Ogle Co.; d. 14 Feb 1912 in Milwaukee, Milwaukee, WI at the National Soldiers' Home. He enlisted in the 134th OH Infantry, Co. A on 6 May 1864 [the Illinois Vet website says it was Co. B]. He was mustered out 31 Aug 1864.
Samuel P. Chaney m. Matilda Wiswell 29 Aug 1878 in Rockford. She was b. @ 1846 in Vallonia, NY and d. 9 Feb 1902 Rockford. Both are buried at Cedar Bluff Cemetery in Rockford, but we were not able to find their stones. [not sure if her birth was Vallonia Springs, Broome Co., NY?]
