Mr. Swingley was born near Hagerstown, Md., in 1817, and at the time of death was aged 90 years. He came to Mount Morris in 1845 and purchased the farm now owned by Mrs. Elizabeth Miller, erecting the house which is still on the premises.
In 1860, with family he moved to Olathe, Kas., and has been a resident of that state for forty-seven years most of which time has been spent at Turner, located ten miles west of Kansas City, where for many years he conducted a general store which is still being operated by his sons, M. S. Swingley and J. J. Swingley. Mr. Swingley was a Kansas soldier during the Civil War and was frequently engaged in the stirring events which grew out of that unpleasantness which were especially acute along the borders of that state.
Less than two years ago two brothers died in Mount Morris within a few weeks of each other, Benjamin and Michael. Both were well advanced in years in fact the entire family have been noted for their longevity. William, another brother, died three years ago in Oregon. Two sisters survive, Mrs. Mary Baker, of Polo, and Mrs. Martha Highbarger, residing in Montana.
Mr. Swingley is survived by eight children: Mrs. E. L. Ainsworth, Turner; Mrs. R. E. Barber, Council Grove, Kan.; M. E. Swingley and J. J. Swingley, Turner; Henry and Charles, residents of Kansas City, Kan.; Samuel, residing in California and Mrs. Charles L. Burke, of Kansas City, Mo.
Until about fifteen months ago Mr. Swingley had enjoyed the best of health for one of his years. At that time he received a fall and his decline became quite rapid. The remains were taken to Olathe and buried beside the wife, who died in 1855.
