Seth Barden Dead

Called After an Illness of Only a few Days – A victim of Paralysis

At his home in South Oregon, on last Sunday forenoon about 11 o’clock, occurred the death of Mr. Seth Barden, an old and most highly esteemed citizen of this community, death resulting from the effects of a paralytic stroke, super-induced by the rupture of a blood vessel. The fraility of human, claim upon this earthly life is exemplified in the death of the deceased. On Thursday evening before his demise Mr. Barden was downtown and remarked to friends that he was feeling unusually well, but upon returning to his home was taken suddenly ill, and grew rapidly worse until the end came. He seemed to have a premonition that it was his last illness, and informed the members of his family that his days on this earthly tenement were few.

The deceased was born in Johnstown, Greenville County, Ontario, May 6th, 1823, being at the time of his death aged 75 years, 10 months and 14 days. He was reared on his father’s farm, where he passed the boyhood days of his life, going from home at the age of 19 years to enlist in the loyalist army gathered at that time from the defense of his country against rebellion. Mr. Barden was married at Morristown, New York, on March 14th, 1843, to Miss Anna Collard. To them were born one daughter and three sons – Margaret, James A., Howard L., and Emery M – all of whom, together with faithful wife, survive. He was a miller by trade and spent some 12 years of his life and milling business in Canada. Mr. Barden came to Ogle County in October, 1863, and engaged in farming near Washington Grove, later moving to Paynes Point, where he resided until the spring of 1881, when he moved to this city, where the remaining years of his life were passed. In the early years of his life he gave his heart to the cause of his Master, uniting the Wesleyan Methodist Church of Canada, being a class leader for a number of years. …..with the First Methodist Episcopal Church of Oregon, and ever remained a consistent member until death severed from all things earthly.

The funeral services were held at the M. E. Church last Tuesday afternoon at 2 o’clock, conducted by his pastor, Rev F. L Baldwin, the large concourse of friends and neighbors in attendance showing the high esteem in which he was held by the people of this community. After the funeral services the remains were laid to rest in Riverview Cemetery.
