DEATH RELIEVES SUFFERING

Mrs. P. T. Sprecher
Mrs. Phillip T. Sprecher, whose maiden named was Susan M. Newcomer, was the daughter of John and Elizabeth Newcomer. She was born in Washington County, Maryland, January 3, 1846. Her grandfather, Joel Newcomer was a descendant of Henry Newcomer, one of three brothers who came to America from Switzerland in an early day. Miss Newcomer grew to womanhood in her native state and came west in 1869, taking up her home with her uncle, Isaac Newcomer, on a farm, west of Mount Morris. January 4, 1876, she was united in marriage with Philip T. Sprecher of this place. To them were born four children, two of whom died in early childhood. The two who with their father survive to mourn the loss of a devoted wife and mother, are Mrs. Bessie Light, residing just east of Mount Morris and Willis Sprecher of Jesup, Iowa. Both children were present at the funeral.

In 1881, the family moved to Leaf River. There Mr. and Mrs. Sprecher remained until July 15, 1902, when they returned to Mount Morris and took up their abode in the beautiful home which has been one of the garden spots of our town and which Mr. and Mrs. Sprecher had planned and built according to their tastes, hoping to spend many long and happy years. Death came July 15, 1908, calling away the beloved companion at the age of 61 years, 7 months and 12 days.

Mrs. Sprecher was one of seven children, three boys and four girls. Of that number, Mrs. Melvin Speilman of this place and John O. Newcomer of Arizona are the only survivors.

At the time that Elder J. B. Wright organized the Christian Church at this place. Mrs. Sprecher was converted and became one of its earliest members. During all her subsequent years she remained a faithful follower and working in her Master’s cause. Her neighbors and friends will remember her as an earnest Christian friend and her companion and children will ever cherish a fond memory of her life and love.

The funeral services were held at the Christian Church at 2 o’clock p.m. Saturday. Rev. Frank Seyster, her former pastor, was called from Lanark to officiate. He was assisted in the services by Rev. Lewis De Poister, present pastor of the congregation. The remains were interred in the town cemetery. The pall bearers were Messes. Lewis Miller, John Hanes, Abram Diehl, Filmore Blake, John Swingley and Samuel Mumma.
