Ulysses Grant Unger Summoned After Protracted Illness at the Age of 72 Years
Last week the Index carried an account of the 50th wedding anniversary of Mr. and Mrs. Grant Unger, an occasion, which brought great happiness to both the principals. This week it is our mission to report the passing of Mr. Unger, who died shortly before 3:00 oclock Tuesday morning at his home on North Wesley Ave.
Perhaps it should be stated that he was determined to live until his golden wedding day. For weeks, he looked forward to the event and made plans for its observance. He enjoyed it fully; even to the moving pictures brought by son Charlie from California, then after it was all over he became resigned to his fate and sank rapidly.
Mr. Ungers death followed a period of over two years of failing health, during which he was active most of the time, frequently visiting the business section until recent months. Never given to complaining, he bore his cross courageously and was always happy to chat with friends who passed his home. Sincere, straight forward and honest, he was a good citizen respected by everyone.
He conducted a cement contracting business for many years, constructing many of the sidewalks about town during the transition from boardwalks, and had a part in the erection of many Mount Morris homes and business houses. In 1913 he accepted a position as fireman with Kable Brothers Company and divided his endeavors between Kable plant and outside activities until his last illness.
Funeral services were conducted yesterday afternoon at the Finch Funeral Home on East Center St, in charge of Rev. J. E. Dale of the Oregon Lutheran Church, and burial was made beside his parents in Plainview Cemetery.Ulysses Grant, son of Chas. H and Hannah Foster Unger, was born November 4, 1868, at Greencastle, PA and at death was 72 years, 11 months and 14 days of age. He came to this vicinity with his parents at the age of 12 and on October 17, 1891, was united in marriage to Miss Lillie May Fouke of Mount Morris.
To this union were born 12 children, one of whom, Mrs. Mildred McIntyre, died on December 31, 1934. Surviving with the widow, are Mrs. Helen Tice, Selby Calif.; Mrs. Charlotte Marsh, Los Angeles Calif.; Charlie, Shasta Dam, Calif.; Mrs. Ruth Friberg, Rockford; Grant Jr., Rock Falls; Lloyd, Oregon; Glenn, Brookville; Mrs. Lois Barbee, Mrs. Edith Stimax, William and Earl, Mount Morris. Also left to mourn his passing are 17 grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
