W. S. POFFENBERGER CALLED TO REST - Respected Leaf River Citizen Passed Away on January 31st

One by one as the leaves of the monster oak of the forest drop off and are done, so our friends die.
Walter Scott Poffenberger was born in Hagerstown, Maryland, October 17, 1849 and came with his parents to Illinois in the early sixties locating near Lightsville. He was united in marriage to Miss Mary Katherine Yeakle, October 2, 1878, to which union two children were born, Mrs. Newton Wagner (Mrs. Paul Speck), and Cora, who departed this life December 24, 1916.

He lived in our midst nearly his whole life excepting nine years in Dakota. The deceased departed this life January 31, 1917. He was a member of the I.O.O.F. Lodge No. 167 at Leaf River.

He leaves to mourn his loss his daughter, Mrs. Newton Wagner, six grandchildren, three brothers, and four sisters and many other relatives and friends.

Mr. Poffenberger was one of those unassuming, good faithful men of our town always true to the work or charge given him, and as the poet hath said:

Earth's transitory things decay,
It's pomps, it's pleasures, pass away,
But the sweet memory of the good,
survives in the vicissitudes.
A.. , the heavens, the urns divine,
Of golden light forever shine,
Tho clouds may darken, storms may rage,
They still shine from age to age,
So thru the ocean tide of years,
The memory of the just apears,
So thru the tempest and the gloom,
The good man's virtue light the tomb.

The funeral was held from the M.E. Church on Friday, Rev. J. C. Williams, officating, and was attended by the I.O.O.F. in a body. Burial was in the cemetery at Lightsville.
