William Sloggett was born at Gramby in the Province of Quebec, Canada, November 18, 1845, and died in his home in Adeline, June 19, 1923, aged 78 years, 7 months, and 1 day. He came with his parents to the States, landing at Forreston at the age of about eight years, residing there until his eighteenth year, when he enlisted in the Union Army on February 24, 1864, and served his country well being mustered out of service at Louisville, Ky., July 12, 1865, receiving an honorable discharge. He was a member of Company H, 34th Division, 14th Corps, Army of Cumberland. He was united in marriage to Mary Ann Miller of West Grove. Five children were born to them, all preceding their father in death, but one son, Lewis O., of Chicago. His wife died August 15, 1883. On January 10, 1889, he was again united in marriage to Sarah M. Stover, and to this union three children were born, William Franklin of Adeline, Alpa Fransen of Byron, and Helen Rowland of German Valley, who with the wife and mother remain to mourn the departure of a loving husband and father. Six grandchildren, a brother living at Ashton, one sister residing at Shingle House, Pa, and two half brothers and two half sisters of Fremont, Neb. also survive. Last May his youngest brother died and two years ago last March the next brother dropped dead at Clinton, Iowa, on the way home after visiting the deceased. Wm. Sloggett was baptized in infancy, becoming a member of the Church of England. The departed was one widely known, holding positions of responsibility in the county of which he was so long a citizen.
