William Boyle Travis, son of George and Catherine Kline Travis, was born near Boonsboro, Washington Co., Maryland, September 16th, 1849 and died at his home in Polo June 1, 1925, aged 75 years, 8 months and 15 days.
He was the third in the family of seven children, four of whom survive: Mrs. Jacob Brown of Dixon, Mrs. Amy Everly, Pine Creek, Mrs Calvin Spickler of Botnia, Iowa and Frank of Polo, and two, Mrs. Emaline Ambrose and Mrs. Jane Pope, died a number of years ago.
In 1868 he came to Illinois. A few weeks later his parents came and settled in Woosung Township, southwest of Polo on the then Jacob Croft place now owned by George Gilbert. The place was on the west part of the farm and later was all cleared away. He worked on the farm with his father for several years.
Feb. 22, 1884, he was married to Mary Ellen Pope of Ogle County. He worked for Henry Rowland, William Powell and others for some years. In 1891 he bought the home where he lived to the time of his death.
To them were born eight children, George W. of Oregon, John A., Mrs. Lulu M. Smith, Mrs. Emma Gilbert, Clayton H., Mrs. LeNora Newcomer, all of Polo, Mrs. Celia A. Quaco of Woosung and Willis H. at hom
In December, 1923, he united with the Church of the Brethren and lived a faithful member to the end.
William Travis was a hard working, honest man, with good habits, never wronging anyone. He did the right as he saw it, reared a large family, finished his course of three quarters of a century and has passed on to his long home in the full hope of eternal life.
Funeral services from the Brethren Church were held Wednesday, June 3, at 2:30 p.m. with burial in Fairmount Cemetery. Rev. John Heckman officiated.
